I promise promise promise this will be the last time I mention this. I gave a little heads up a few weeks ago when the Ireland & Northern Ireland at Venice shows opened in the NCAD Gallery and at Farmleigh, but I wanted to give another reminder that the second of the two shows hosted in NCAD, Kennedy Browne’s ‘167’, will be opening tomorrow evening and running until May 15th.
I’m especially excited about this one as it’s the first chance I’ve had to see the finished project since I helped Gareth Kennedy and Sarah Browne in the filming stages just over a year ago. I worked with them at Liberty Hall on two occassions. The first was the screen test day in the Liberty Hall Theatre and the second was the video shoot on the roof. The screen test day (pictured above) involved filming a huge number of people who had responded to various ads looking for people who could speak different languages. Tomorrow night at 6pm, the results of that long, hard day will be screened in the very same theatre with many of those who took part in attendance. After the 38min film is over, a bus will take people from Liberty Hall over to Thomas Street where the completed work incorporating the rooftop video will be exhibited in the NCAD Gallery and officially opened by the new Minister for Tourism, Culture & Sport, Mary Hanafin.
The project looks at modern Dublin’s multi-ethnic and multi-lingual population through the words of Milton Friedman when speaking about a pencil in 1980: “Look at this lead pencil. There’s not a single person in the world who could make this pencil…That is why the operation of the free market is so essential. Not only, to promote productive efficiency, but even more… to foster harmony and peace among the peoples of the world.” It might not sound like it makes much sense, but in the hands of two of Ireland’s brightest young artists, things inevitably fall into place. If you get a chance when visiting the show, have a look at the beautifully made catalogues that accompany the show and you might see some of my photos. A few samples are included below as well as here.
