I was glad to see a pretty packed house in Twisted Pepper last Friday evening for Jennifer Evans & The Ripe Intent’s EP launch. Jennifer and her equally impressive band played a good long set to an awestruck crowd of fans, both new and old. Songs from the EP, songs she wrote back when she was in school and new songs alike were all greeted with grinning, reverential quiet and rapturous applause. It was a pity the support act, Our Little Secrets, had to content with a much smaller and chattier audience as Rhob Cunningham’s new project had some intruiging tunes in their set. The Twisted Pepper’s stage room is far from being the ideal location for a singer-songwriter type gig, but with a voice as commanding as Jennifer’s and a band as confident and intricately skillful as The Ripe Intent, this was never a drawback. I could talk forever here about the gig but I still wouldn’t get close to doing her voice any kind of justice no matter how many standard 20th century female singers’ names I reference.
By far the best thing you can do is check out some songs and tour dates on their MySpace. Live dates include tonight at the Ruby Sessions in Doyle’s and stops in Waterford, Galway, Kilkenny & Cork over the next fortnight. The Salient Point EP is available in all good stores as well as online from HMV and iTunes (search it yourself!). Obviously I’d recommend you check with your local indepenent record store first though. More photos below and in the Flickr set.
