tUnE-YaRdS returned to Dublin this weekend and got such a good response she considered moving here to live a life of fame and adoration. It was mightily different from her previous visit supporting Dirty Projectors in September. That night she walked onto a stage in front of a small crowd who had arrived early and played her set with confidence and gusto, though she was clearly aware that her style of music and performance was likely to shock and confuse the uninitiated. On Friday night she had the same venue packed full of converts who hung on her every utterance and even tried to sing along. She’s an altogether better performer when she’s on the receiving end of such whooping praise and Merril Garbus proved what a chatty and affable lady she is between songs with plenty of jokes and buckets of humility.
Support was from Hunter-Gatherer, who performed behind a miniature version of a child’s bed-fort complete with glow-sticks. I’ve been listening to his album I Dreamed I Was A Footstep In The Trail Of A Murderer since it’s release before Christmas but this was my first time seeing him live. Dressed all in black, including a mask through which he added his creepy, breathy gasps and longing wails, he did a commendable job of shushing the drinkers and drawing the crowd into his set of sinister, moody electronics.
