Absolutely amazing news I saw the other day. New Awlins’ wonderful Hot 8 Brass Band are returning to Dublin to play Whelan’s on Saturday July 11th. Their last gig there in February ’08 was without a doubt one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to. These guys packed so much fun into a room on Wexford St on a cold, wet night that I felt confused walking down to the Bernard Shaw afterwards because people weren’t dancing in the street and taking their clothes off. The packed venue turned into a complete mad-house, particularly during their 15 minute-plus encore of “Sexual Healing” which resulted in every female within arm’s reach being dragged on-stage with the band (not that they complained).
Now, the problem in this whole equation is that this gig will clash with the Oxegen festival, which takes place over that weekend in Punchestown. Bruce is also playing that weekend, but I don’t mind missing his 2 hour ad for the durability of Levi’s jeans. But it does mean choosing between The Hot 8 Brass Band and Blur, Elbow, Nick Cave, TV On The Radio (!), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Doves, Florence & The Machine, Ladyhawke, Friendly Fires and Foals. Believe it or not, that’s actually a tough call!
